Happy Thursday - Two Things from the Week: Leap Motion and Silk Road

Infrared similar to Xbox Kinect maybe? We just got a Leap Motion given to our club to mess around with. Let me know if you have any cool UI/UX ideas!

Also, most of you probably heard Silk Road got busted yesterday. Here is the story Des passed along to me last night. Bitcoin took a hit as well with the bust. Might be interesting to see where the currency and online marketplace go now, or what the next big innovation in the virtual marketplace might be.

  1. Here's what to consider with the leap motion (especially vs. Kinect):

    * The leap is highly sensitive to detail. With Kinect, we design gestures with big motions. (i.e. a wave, putting your hands up, swiping with your whole arm. With leap, these don't work. Just a slight movement in your fingers get's picked up. gestures should be designed with this in mind.

*With Leap, you have an invisible plane where the "screen" is. I.E. if you go to click a link on a screen, you have to cross this plane. These gestures feel much less natural. We put one in front of a screen, and tried to interact this way, and we all found ourselves just wanting to touch the screen. Play around with placement of the Leap, as it will drastically change the experience.

    * Leap motion shoots its IR up. This means that if one finger is directly above the other, it won't get picked up. Make sure the gestures you design don't rely on this. I.E. if you want to rotate an object, the leap is going to stop tracking when you hit about 90 degrees.

    * Gestures that would be natural on a touch screen feel VERY unnatural on a leap, i.e. swiping with one finger feels strange because you have to touch this invisible plane to do it. It would probably be better to design gestures that do not rely directly on the depth of the interaction.

*Leap is excellent at controlling pitch/ roll/ yaw. I would love to see some interactions relating to the angle of your hand.

    * I would love to see some gestures where you make a fist to grab objects or pages. Manipulating objects in 3D space with pinches would be awesome.

Let me know if you get a bit further down the road on this project and need some ideas. I can hit up my team for some ideas too. It's way too easy to get them talkng about this stuff lol

Also if you end up needing help with coding, I would definitely get involved. Our leap has sat sadly unused for way too long.
